Alberta Basaglia is Franco Basaglia’s daughter. Franco Basaglia was an Italian psychiatrist who was instrumental in the Italian psychiatric reform movement that resulted in the passage of the Basaglia Law in 1978. In Italy, the law abolished mental hospitals and replaced them with community-based mental health services.

Basaglia is a psychologist who currently leads the Municipality of Venice’s Youth Participation and Culture of Peace Service. Since 1980, she has also led the Women’s Center and the Anti-Violence Center. Although she was initially drawn to technical-scientific subjects and considered a career in engineering, she ultimately chose to follow in her parents’ footsteps and study psychology. During her studies, she was reminded of her father’s legacy, which she found difficult. She persisted, however, and graduated with her father, Franco Basaglia, in the audience. The Basaglia law, passed in 1978, opened asylum doors and restored dignity to those imprisoned in inhumane conditions. While this was an important step forward, Alberta believes the revolution is not yet complete. She believes that revolutions are ongoing and that they must constantly transform in order to achieve their goals. Many people, including migrants, still lack rights, and psychiatry has a lot of work to do.

Alberta is concerned about the possibility of regress and emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring progress to ensure that no one is left behind. Alberta’s parents never gave up on her and encouraged her to make the most of her life. She had a loving family who was there for her every day, in good and bad times. Even after being told she would go blind, they refused to believe it and let her go skiing. Alberta simply closed her eyes and went for it when her mother asked how she skied. Her mother was overjoyed, but she was never stopped from doing what she wanted. Alberta was raised to believe that there were many ways to live and that nothing was impossible.
